Since Hansel and Gretel is such a well known fairy tale, I wonder why it took Ladybird until 1982 to issue this one? Perhaps because if it had been issued earlier and illustrated by Eric Winter it would have been too scary? Certainly the illustrations, by Pat Oakley, are very stylised and unlikely to give anyone nightmares. The book was retold by Joan Cameron.
